Mercato brings a touch of Italy to Adelaide.

One of the best things about my job as the Marketing Manager for Blackbird IT is that I get to go out and meet some of our clients. To understand what they do, their story and how we came to work together.

I enjoy it because every business is different and interesting. It’s always an insightful conversation and something I look forward to.

Last year I met with John Caporaso (Managing Director) and Vicki Bettison (Chief Finance Officer) from an Adelaide institution –  Mercato, who are celebrating 50 years of business in 2022.

“We love the attitude of the team, and as we are not IT experts, we need someone we can trust, and Blackbird IT are proactive partners. A partner that has an ahead of the curve and always thinking about the future instead of a reactive approach.” – John Caporaso – Managing Director

WHO ARE MERCATO?

Mercato is a special place, somewhere I go to get our weekly deli meats, pasta or with the kids for a coffee and a traditional cake. It’s a unique place with a rich history, modern but with a traditional Italian feel.

John and Vicki greet me in the cafe section. We sit down, and they offer me a coffee—the perfect start to a meeting. During our chat, people pop past and say hi or ciao to John and Vicki. It’s good to be out after a recent lockdown. It’s a nice vibe being here, and this is what I learned about Mercato and their strong connection with people, food, smallgoods, wine, Italy, and South Australia.web 94 1024x1024

Mercato started as a local continental shop, similar to a shop or deli you might remember as from your childhood, but with a theme of Italy. That’s what Mercato do, they bring a touch of Italy to Adelaide. They do this exceptionally well. John recalls the story of where this all began. His mum Imma worked at a shop in Rostrevor, and it came up for sale. She loved the vibe there and working with people. Somehow, she convinced her husband Mario, who was a bricky at the time to buy the business, and that’s where it all started.

John tells me about his fond memories of childhood. Life at the shop and that’s how he and his sister Angela grew up from 2 years of age. After the school day was finished it was back to the shop, homework at the shop, eating dinner at the shop. Weekends working and helping out at the shop.

At the age of eighteen, John wanted a change, some variety, and he got a job with Bianco’s Construction and happily worked there for ten years. In 1998 it was time to come home, his wife Rose was pregnant, he had a long think about the long game, and it was the right time to go back to his roots. Three days later, he came was back to the shop.

Mercato has grown over the years, and their current premises are 950 square meters, much bigger than the original shop and about five times bigger than their previous premises. It’s an impressive space, there is a complete range of Italian and Italian themed smallgoods, and they also have beautiful wines, pastries, bar Mercato products and they also have a successful wholesale and importing business. Amongst all these products is the theme of Italy, quality, and a genuine passion for connecting with people. You also notice the modern cooking station where the team have been running cooking classes and events since 2010. Mercato is a unique place, a family and community vibe and clearly built on the love of food.

It was great to meet John and the team, to get a feel for where it all began and I recommend popping in to see what they are all about.
